Make It or Break It has been axed by ABC Family.



The drama series - which began airing in 2009 - focused on the lives of teen gymnasts striving to make it to the Olympic Games.

The current third season, which premiered on March 26, will be the show's last, according to various sources.

Make It or Break It's original star Chelsea Hobbs (Emily Kmetko) left the show at the close of season two, while recurring actor Josh Bowman also departed to appear in ABC's Revenge.

The third run will be comprised of just eight episodes, with series finale 'United Stakes' airing on May 14.

Series creator Holly Sorenson confirmed on Twitter that the cancellation was not planned, writing: "When you make a season, you never know if it' s the last. It's planned months before [decisions are made]."

ABC Family recently renewed its show The Lying Game for a second season and is also developing a number of new series, including drama Bunheads, comedy Baby Daddy and documentary series Beverly Hills Nannies.
