AMC is saying goodbye to “Dietland”

In an announcement released this afternoon, the network has officially canceled the freshman series after just one season. The news comes almost two months after “Dietland” wrapped up its first season on the network back at the end of July.

“‘Dietland’ is bold, original and brave. We are beyond proud of our partnership with Marti Noxon, [stars] Joy Nash, Juliana Margulies, [producers] Skydance and everyone else involved in bringing Sarai Walker’s story to the screen,” said AMC. “Similarly, Aisha Tyler and our friends at Embassy Row delivered a unique companion show that led with fresh voices and important topics. ‘Dietland’ garnered critical acclaim and passionate fans but unfortunately we will not be able to continue with a second season.”

Created by Marti Noxon, and based on a novel by Sarai Walker, the series followed Plum Kettle, a ghostwriter for the editor of one of New York’s hottest fashion magazines, who – after struggling for years with her self-image – becomes fed up with how she’s been treated by her boss and society and decides to set out on a wildly complicated road to self-awakening. It starred Joy Nash, Julianna Margulies, Tamara Tunie, Robin Weigert, Rowena King, and more.

Despite receiving critical acclaim, the series wasn’t able to generate a large enough audience to warrant giving it a second season. Throughout its first, it averaged a low 0.1 live + same day rating in the adults 18-49 demo with 433,000 viewers. After raking in 668,000 viewers with its premiere too, the series experienced a gradual decline in viewership throughout its run, with its finale raking in less than half of audience of the premiere with 300,000.
