William Shakespeare’s time on TNT has come to a quick end

The network has officially canceled their freshman historical drama, “Will,” after just one season, it was announced this afternoon. Created by Craig Pearce, the series took place in late 16th century, when a young William Shakespeare first arrived on the punk-rock theater scene in London and proceeded to change history forever with his work throughout the years. Laurie Davidson played the titular role of the young Shakespeare, starring alongside Olivia DeJonge, Mattias Inwood, Ewen Bremner, William Houston, and more.

The cancellation of “Will” doesn’t come as much of a surprise, though, since despite being promoted well throughout the summer leading up to its premiere, the series was met with mixed critical reviews when it debuted on TNT back in early July. In addition, the series didn’t perform all that well ratings-wise through its run, after averaging only 0.2 and 0.1 ratings in adults 18-49, and with its total viewership numbers dropping fairly steadily throughout each subsequent episode.

“Will” was one of two new series launched by TNT this summer, alongside the critically-acclaimed dramedy, “Claws,” which has already been renewed for another season by the network. With this cancellation, the network’s lineup now consists of “Claws,” “Animal Kingdom,” “Good Behavior,” “The Last Ship,” “The Librarians,” and “Major Crimes.” However, several new series including “The Alienist,” “Snowpiercer,” and “Deadlier Than Male,” are currently set to premiere soon or have already received pilot orders by the network.

“Will” aired the final installment of its 10-episode freshman season last night on the network.
