The cable network's period drama, which was its first original scripted programme, will not return for a third run, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Launching in 2012, the drama struggled in the ratings and aired its final episode on September 15.

"Copper has been a fascinating and exciting experience for everyone involved," said BBC America's Perry Simon.

"The opportunity to work with Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Will Rokos, Thomas Kelly and the extraordinary cast and crew on this journey is one that we are extremely proud of. Their vision to re-tell the immigrant experience through the melting pot of New York City was an original and fresh idea that melded well with the essence of BBC America's programming.

"After 23 episodes, with Lincoln dead and the nation starting to heal, it seems a fitting moment to conclude this American story."

Copper is set in 1860s New York City during the American Civil War and stars Tom Weston-Jones (Spooks) as an Irish immigrant policeman.

Earlier this month, LoveFilm announced it had acquired the rights to exclusively stream the series.

Tom Weston-Jones recently spoke to Digital Spy about his hopes that the series would return for a third season.
