Spike’s attempt to jump on the popular Stephen King train has met a quick end

“The Mist” has officially been canceled after airing just one season on the network, Spike announced this afternoon. Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, the series followed a group of characters living in a small town in Maine, who retreat into a grocery store when a mysterious mist comes into town and begins killing everyone it covers. Meanwhile, the citizens are still individually dealing with a crime that had previously torn the town apart, and with the Mist looming over them all, their relationships are threatened to be torn apart again, this time once and for all.

The series was picked up straight to series by Spike and starred Morgan Spector, Alyssa Sutherland, Gus Birney, Danica Curcic, Okezie Morro, Russell Posner, Luke Cosgrove, Darren Pettie, Dan Butler, Isaiah Washington Jr., and Frances Conroy. It was produced by TWC-Dimension, along with executive producers Amanda Segel and Christian Torpe.

“The Mist” premiered back at the end of June and wrapped up its first season just a little over a month ago. It didn’t manage to make much of an impact in the ratings, though, averaging only a 0.14 rating in adults 18-49 and 462,000 viewers per episode.

The news of “The Mist” cancellation comes just a few months before Spike will be rebranded as The Paramount Channel in January of next year, where all of its existing series and in-development titles will migrate over to. It is one of several Stephen King adaptations to hit the big and small screen this year.
