Dorothy’s journey along the iconic yellow brick road has met a short, quick end, NBC has officially announced

“Emerald City,” a modern-day reimagining of “The Wizard of Oz,” has been canceled by NBC today. Coming from co-creators, Matthew Arnold and Josh Friedman, the short-order series brought its own unique spin on the traditional “Oz” story, starting with Adria Arjona’s Dorothy Gale being transported via tornado from her hometown in Kansas to a magical new world. Premiering in January, “Emerald City” was a long time in the making at NBC, after originally being picked up to series right away, then scrapped by NBC, before being picked up again with another writer attached at the helm.

All in all, it took almost two full years before NBC had brought “Emerald City” from the page to the small screen, and with a couple impressive cast members attached to it, including Vincent D’Onofrio as the Wizard himself, the series was one of the network’s more ambitious new endeavors of 2017. It concluded its first season at the beginning of March.

However, “Emerald City” was met with lackluster ratings from its first episode, averaging only a 1.2 rating in adults 18-49 throughout its 10-episode-long first season. Its critical reviews weren’t any more favorable either, with many critics calling it a contrived and needlessly moody retelling of an already beloved story.

It joins the DC comics sitcom series, “Powerless,” as the second freshman show to be canceled by NBC so far this year. Make sure to stay tuned for more updates to come.
