Syfy has made a straight-to-series order for a new drama based on the novel The Expanse, it has been announced.
Adapted from a collection of books by James S.A. Corey, the series has been described as a "rocking space opera" by George R.R. Martin. The space odyssey takes place 200 years into the future.
The show follows a detective and rogue space captain as they search for a young woman who has mysteriously gone missing.
According The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar-nominated writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby have signed on to write and produce the series.
The new show is part of a larger Syfy initiative to revamp its programming roster.
The network has ordered several new shows, including a 12 Monkeys remake starring Aaron Stanford , The Wil Wheaton Project, Z Nation, and Olympus.
Syfy studio head David Howe described it as the channel's "most ambitious series to date".
"Bringing this coveted book franchise to television with our partners at Alcon and the Sean Daniel Co. is a giant win for Syfy, reinforcing our overall strategy to produce bold, provocative and compelling sci-fi fantasy stories."
