The Munsters reboot starring Jerry O'Connell, Eddie Izzard and Portia de Rossi has been axed after a single pilot episode, creator Bryan Fuller announced on Twitter.

Fuller wrote: "I tweet with a heavy heart. NBC not moving forward with #MockingbirdLane. From producers and cast, thank you all for enthusiasm and support."

Mockingbird Lane was originally developed by the previous NBC controllers in 2010-11. However, its script was kept by new chief Bob Greenblatt in January 2011.

The show was redeveloped and ordered to a pilot in November 2011, before being delayed until June 2012 due to casting issues.

Bryan Singer directed the pilot with O'Connell as family head Herman Munster and Izzard as Grandpa.

The pilot was originally passed but was later aired as a Halloween special in October. It scored relatively decent ratings with 5.4 million viewers and a 1.5 18-49 demographic score.

However, despite rumours that the project may be refocused on Grandpa and cousin Marilyn, NBC has now decided to drop the series altogether.

Mockingbird Lane's pilot episode is said to have cost $10 million in total.
