FOX announced that the series will not be returning (again) nearly two months after airing its season finale. While the revival was technically only intended as a six-episode miniseries, the door had been left open for future seasons in the event that it performed well. As of Thursday night, it has become clear that will not come to pass.

In making the announcement, FOX said, “We are so proud to have reunited in a very special summer event one of the network’s legacy series and casts with ‘90210’ fans across the country. Profound thanks to and respect for (Brian Austin Green, Gabrielle Carteris, Ian Ziering, Jason Priestly, Jennie Garth, Shannen Doherty and Tori Spelling) who, along with the entire crew and everyone at FOX and CBS Television Studios, poured their hearts and souls into this truly inventive and nostalgic revival.”

The plot of “BH 90210” followed the original cast members of the series in somewhat fictionalized, over-the-top accounts of their real-life experiences. The gang is back together after having gone separate ways in the 19 years since the original series aired, and in their attempt to get the new reboot off the ground, they must navigate both new hijinks as well as the complexities of their past histories with each other.

The revival debuted with a 2.3 Live+7 rating in adults 18-49 with about 5.67 million viewers. Over time, this viewership noticeably declined; by the end of the season, the show averaged a 1.6 rating with 3.96 million viewers. Considering the massive number of views accrued by its trailer, released in May, expectations for the series were higher than it ever managed to live up to. When combined with rumors of behind-the-scenes drama, this makes the cancellation fall somewhere just short of being a surprise.
