Dredd has been given an R-rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

The Karl Urban-starring reboot was stamped with the certificate due to its depiction of "strong bloody violence, language, drug use, and sexual content".

Star Trek actor Urban will star as the titular lawman in the film, which promises to be closer to the 2000 AD comics series than the 1995 Sylvester Stallone-fronted version.

Dredd, co-directed by Pete Travis and Alex Garland, will feature Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey in supporting roles.

Judge Dredd was created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra in collaboration with editor Pat Mills. He made his debut in the second issue of 2000 AD in 1977.

Dredd arrives in theatres in September.
