Despite being summer, it seems that a lot of people were in the mood for a grown-up horror film.
Box Office Mojo reports that Annabelle: Creation, the fourth film in The Conjuring series, has debuted atop the US Box Office this weekend.
The film grossed $35,040,000, which might be the lowest opening weekend the series has had so far, but is still more than double its $15 million budget (before you factor in marketing costs, of course).
Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk holds steady in second place with a $11,405,000 weekend gross, while The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature fails to open to double figures with $8.9 million.
Last week's number one movie, the critically disappointing The Dark Tower, fell from the top to fourth place in its second week, grossing $7,875,000. The Stephen King adaptation has so far grossed just over $34 million in the US, well below its $60 million pre-marketing budget.
Rounding out the top five is The Emoji Movie, which made $6,580,000 in its third week.
The rest of the top ten consists of Girls Trip, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Kidnap, new entry The Glass Castle and Atomic Blonde in that order.
