And it's a three-way race for the next highest new entry

America's favourite actor has done it again, as Tom Hanks' latest film Sully maintains a comfortable hold of the top of the US Box Office charts for a second week running.

Taking in another $22 million in its second week of release, Hanks' take on the hero pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger who successfully landed a plane on New York's Hudson River in 2009 continued to win over audiences at the cinema this weekend by a very large margin.

In fact, Sully's closest competition was new entry Blair Witch, which took over $10m dollars less than the biopic for a box office taking of $9.65m in its first weekend to enter in at No. 2.

Fellow new entries Bridget Jones' Baby and Snowden followed in third and fourth place this week, taking $8.24m and $8.02m respectively, while surprise box office success Don't Breathe dropped two places to round out the top 5 with $5.6m.

Psychological thriller When the Bough Breaks took another $5.5m in its second week of release to finish the week at No. 6, while everyone's favourite gang of anti-hero supervillains hold on to their place in the top 10 as Suicide Squad drops three places to 7.

The life of the island animals caught up in Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe get their story told in new adaptation The Wild Life, which finishes this week at 8 with another $2.65m in its second week of release.

And it's been another good week for Kubo and the Two Strings and Pete's Dragon as the two films round out this week's box office figures with $2.5m and $2m respectively to fly the flag for children's films in the US.

The top ten in full is as follows:

1. (1) Sully - $22,000,000

2. (-) Blair Witch - $9,650,000

3. (-) Bridget Jones' Baby - $8,240,715

4. (-) Snowden - $8,023,329

5. (3) Don't Breathe - $5,600,000

6. (2) When the Bough Breaks - $5,525,000

7. (4) Suicide Squad - $4,710,000

8. (5) The Wild Life - $3,650,000

9. (6) Kubo and the Two Strings - $2,500,000

10. (7) Pete's Dragon - $2,041,000
