The animated sequel has stolen several titles in its opening weekend

Finding Dory has already set a new box office record - just three days after it was released.

The much-anticipated Disney-Pixar sequel to 2003's Finding Nemo has had the biggest opening weekend of all time for an animated film, raking in an estimated $136.2 million.

Disney had predicted that the film would earn around $100 million over the weekend, according to The Wrap.

But it surpassed expectations to take the crown from previous record-holder Shrek the Third, which grossed $121.6 million in its opening weekend.

Finding Dory also broke records for the biggest single day at the box office for an animated movie for both Friday and Thursday, beating Shrek the Third and Minions respectively for those days.

The film also broke Pixar records, beating the opening weekend of Toy Story 3, which grossed $110 million in its first few days of release in 2010.

As if all that wasn't enough, Finding Dory is also the second-largest June opening of all time. It's beaten only by last year's monster hit Jurassic World.

Finding Nemo, in comparison, earned $70.2 million in its opening weekend 13 years ago, and has grossed $936.7 million worldwide since.

Finding Dory, which focuses on Dory going in search of her parents, features the voice talents of Ellen DeGeneres, Ed O'Neill, Ty Burrell, Diane Keaton, Albert Brooks and Idris Elba.

It is released in the UK on July 29.
