Guillermo del Toro is currently working on the Pacific Rim 2 script.The writer/director revealed that the action movie sequel is yet to receive the greenlight from Legendary Pictures.
When asked by IGN whether Blu-ray sales would decide the sequel's future, del Toro said, "No, we are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active.
"The decision to greenlight or not, that's definitely above my pay rate."
Pacific Rim had a disappointing opening at the US box office, but went on to perform strongly worldwide.
Grossing over $400 million (£250 million), the film is the best-performing action movie based on an original intellectual property released in 2013 so far.
Star Charlie Hunnam recently dropped out of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie, leading to speculation that he could return for Pacific Rim 2.
