The streets of Gotham will be haunted by DC's villains for another season.



Fox has officially announced that the Batman prequel drama is coming back for season 3.

"For the past two seasons, Bruno [Heller], Danny [Cannon] and John [Stephens] have masterfully honoured the mythology of Gotham and brought it to life with depth, emotion and memorable high drama," Fox entertainment president David Madden said in a statement.

"This incredibly talented cast has redefined these iconic characters for a new generation, and we couldn't be more proud of this show."

The series is currently in the middle of its second season, and has been performing well in the ratings with an average of 9 million viewers across multi-platforms.

Gotham's Ben McKenzie, who plays Gotham City police detective James Gordon, recently welcomed a baby girl with co-star Morena Baccarin, who plays Dr Leslie Thompson.

Jada Pinkett Smith has lined up a return to season 2, while Paul Reubens is about to debut as The Penguin's father Tucker Cobblepot – a role he originally played in Batman Returns.

Gotham airs on Fox in the US and Channel 5 in the UK.
