Adele: ‘New single is a f**k you’

Adele '21'
Adele has described her new single as a “f**k you” to a critical ex-boyfriend.

The singer revealed that she wrote ‘Rolling In The Deep’ – the lead single from her upcoming second album 21 – after being insulted by a fault-finding former lover.

“I guess it’s sort of my musical equivalent of saying things in the heat of the moment and word vomiting,” she said of the single, which is available to download now.

“It was my reaction to being told that my life was going to be boring and lonely and rubbish and that I was a weak person if I didn’t stay in a relationship. So yeah, I was very insulted and I wrote [the song] as a sort of f**k you.”

The Grammy-winning singer also revealed that her talents had been tapped to a greater extent than ever before while working with Paul Epworth, the track’s co-writer and producer.

“I wasn’t really expecting anything out of the session, just because he’s known for being very indie, and I’m known for being very pop, so I wasn’t sure if it would work too well, but it ended up being a match made in heaven,” she said.

“He brought a lot out of me. He brought my voice out as well. There’s notes in that song I never even knew I could hit.”
