Fantastic Four might have bombed out at the US box office this weekend, but the beleaguered superhero film has managed to overcome bad buzz and secure a small victory in the UK.
The Josh Trank-directed blockbuster opened with a £2.6 million haul to secure the box office top spot ahead of Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
However, the total falls some way behind matching the success of the previous incarnation in the Fox/Marvel franchise. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer topped the chart with £4.1 million in 2007, while 2005’s Fantastic Four debuted to a £3.5 million opening weekend.
Elsewhere in this week’s chart, Joel Edgerton’s thriller The Gift was a new entry at number five after taking in £584,552.
