‘The Smurfs 2’ beats ‘The Heat’ at UK box office

The Smurfs 2 has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The family comedy earned £3.2 million to hold off competition from other new releases The Heat and The Conjuring to secure the top spot.

The sequel’s total falls just short of the £3.7 million opening of its predecessor, which debuted in second place behind Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011.

The Wolverine, last week’s number one movie, saw a 62% drop in ticket sales to take fourth place, while Monsters University rounded out the top five.

Elsewhere, the top 10 sees new releases from the Bruce Willis-led action sequel RED 2 and Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives at numbers seven and nine respectively.
