‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ topples ‘Iron Man 3’

Star Trek Into Darkness has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

JJ Abrams’ sci-fi blockbuster pulled in £8.4 million to secure first place ahead of Marvel’s Iron Man 3. Into Darkness‘s opening haul is up from the £5.9 million debut for the 2009 Star Trek reboot.

Iron Man 3 still has the biggest UK opening weekend of 2013, with its £13.7 million bow outpacing Into Darkness and musical Les Misérables (£8.1 million).

Elsewhere, the only other new release to make it into the top 10 is Matthew McConaughey drama Mud at number seven.

Bollywood zombie movie Go Goa Gone and The Reluctant Fundamentalist land just outside at numbers 14 and 15 respectively.
