‘Iron Man 3’ posts biggest opening of 2013

Iron Man 3 has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The Marvel sequel earned £13.7 million to easily soar past rival blockbusters Olympus Has Fallen and Oblivion to top the chart.

The Iron Man sequel’s earnings outperform franchise predecessors Iron Man 2 (which earned £6.7 million in 2010) and Iron Man (£4.7 million in 2008).Iron Man 3 has grossed $195.3 million from international territories, beating The Avengers‘s $185.1 million opening weekend from last year.

However, Joss Whedon’s ensemble blockbuster still has the UK opening weekend edge over Iron Man 3, having taken more than £15 million in April 2011.

Iron Man 3 will further boost its already impressive box office haul when it opens in the US and China this weekend.
