‘FIFA’ becomes UK’s first £1 billion franchise

FIFA is the first gaming franchise to generate more than £1 billion at UK retail.

It took the franchise 40 games to reach the milestone, according to Chart-Track figures (via CVG), although the last two releases earned close to £200 million.

Call of Duty is the second-highest-earning franchise at UK retail, generating £800 million across 19 games.

Mario, meanwhile, only manages third, despite the release of more than 60 games and spinoffs.

The figures, which only date back to 1996, don’t take into account DLC sales.

FIFA 13 sold more than 4.5 million copies across all platforms in its first five days at retail – making it not only the UK’s biggest game launch of 2012, but also the biggest sports game launch ever.

It dominated the all-format charts after its first weekend, selling over 1.23m copies in its first 48 hours, and was recently revealed to have topped 7.4m sales in four weeks.

FIFA 13 is available on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii, Wii U, PSP, 3DS, PS2, Vita, iPhone and iPad.
