‘Les Misérables’ holds off ‘Django Unchained’ at UK box office

Les Misérables has held off competition from Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained to top the UK box office.

Tom Hooper’s musical, starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway, pulled in £4.4 million on its second weekend in theatres to easily hold off competition from Tarantino’s slavery western.

Life of Pi slips down to number three, while The Impossible rises a place to four. Warner Bros’s all-star Gangster Squad rounds out the top five.

The 3D re-release of Monsters, Inc is the only other new release to trouble the top ten.

This weekend sees the release of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand, the controversial Zero Dark Thirty and Oscar frontrunner Lincoln. All three are likely to challenge for places in the top five.
