Hobbit sees off The Impossible at the box office

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has topped the UK box office for the fourth consecutive weekend.

Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-earth held off strong competition from drama The Impossible to secure the top spot with £4,075,781 in ticket sales.

Life of Pi falls down a place to number three with £3,345,579, taking its UK box office haul past £17 million.

Dustin Hoffman’s Quartet is a new entry at number four, while Tom Cruise thriller Jack Reacher rounds out the top five.

Elsewhere, Skyfall spends its eleventh week in the top ten and has now earned a staggering £101,572,493 from its UK cinemas run.
