Coventry Aldi rations tomato puree as panic-buying spreads beyond essentials

Image

A supermarket in Coventry has began rationing tomato puree, as panic-buying amid the coronavirus outbreak grows.

With the number of confirmed cases of the illness on the rise in the UK, shoppers have been descending on supermarkets, clearing shelves of essentials such as toilet roll and anti-bacterial soap.

But the list of items that are becoming scarce is growing, with the Aldi store in Canley introducing sales restrictions on tomato puree and passata today (March 15).

Pictures from outside the store, taken by Kerry Blakeman, show crowds of shoppers waiting to enter the store today.

And signs posted on the shop windows are in place, to make customers aware of the rationing system in place.

It is a situation that is not unique to the Aldi store in Canley.

Pictures showed similar scenes at the Gallagher Retail Park today, with reports saying much the same at the Asda store in Nuneaton.

Yesterday (March 14), Aldi revealed that they were limiting all customers to purchasing a maximum of four of any item.

Local social media is rumbling about local stores profiteering by upping their prices for existing stock.

One of ours has a few mentions Melisandre!

A quick dash round Tesco this morning...

No household cleaning products or soaps. - The checkout girl made a very interesting observation which was absolutely true, but I'll not repeat it for fear of creating a panic on other goods.

I got everything I needed, including cat food. ;)

I was told last week there was a fight in Aldi Bedworth over toilet paper it was rationed one packet per person.. There was no shortage its they cant get the orders in quick enough because of this panic buying.

Just wait and see if this panic buying does nt stop so far sales are up 30 percent in a certain big shop chain but when this all dies down they top brass fear it will affect the market to go into a slump with no one buying because of stock piling so this will cause a lot of jobs to go and will cause a knock on effect if this does nt stop I ve been told by a very reliable source.

Iceland to offer special shopping hours for over 70s

Iceland bosses have confirmed that they will have special opening hours solely for OAPs to shop to ensure they get essential items.

Coventry, Nuneaton and Bedworth branches will dedicate Wednesday (March 18) opening hours from 9am until 11am especially for older shoppers.

It to ensure that they can access essential items amid scenes of mayhem as people scramble for non-perishables such as toilet rolls and pasta to hand gel and hand wash.

"We will be opening from 9am until 11am on Wednesday for older shoppers only," said a spokesperson at Bedworth's store.

"This is a company wide policy. We are not sure how long it is going to last but it is definitely this Wednesday."
