'May someone look after this city' - top-rated street food vendor issues stinging farewell just weeks after relocating to Hertford Street

A popular street food kiosk has pulled down its shutters for the final time just weeks after relocating to an outdoor area in Coventry city centre.

Millie's Kitchen fired a series of parting shots over the tarmac-covered Hertford Street location as it announced its departure on Tuesday (March 10). Food vans which had been in Market Way and Smithford Way were relocated on January 5 to make way for ongoing works to transform the city centre.

The newly-laid tarmac ground was opened up in 2019 to reveal a lost view of the city into Broadgate.

Announcing the closure in a Facebook post, the food kiosk said: "It is with great sadness that Millie's Kitchen has closed its doors for the last time.

"The third of the outdoor food kiosks to leave since the relocation in January.

"The desolated, unfinished and imposed new location was the nail in the coffin.

"We have been struggling for quite some time and in the end the extortionate rent, the struggle to get good reliable staff and the lack of support through out the relocation finally did it. We shall not be part of the redevelopment of the city and probably never were. May someone look after this city as it's falling on his knees."

The Mediterranean food vendor had remained a popular haunt despite its struggles.

In September 2018, CoventryLive reported how it was the top-rated restaurant in the city, even though it did not have a seating area, with a five-star rating on TripAdvisor.

The kitchen said: "I would like to thank everyone that has supported and followed Millie and her kitchen You kept us going for as long as we did. Much love, great food and wonderful stories were shared. Precious memories. A page is turned and while I walk away I never turned my back. Take care all of you out there!"

Meanwhile, the council have their fingers in their ears, singing "la, la, la, la. I can't hear you!"
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
