Police are investigating a callous crime where a pensioner in a wheelchair had £50 stolen from her as she used a city centre cashpoint machine.

The theft happened outside the Sainsbury’s store in Trinity Street, opposite Pool Meadow bus station, at around 5pm on Thursday January 16.

The 66-year-old victim had withdrawn £50 from the cashpoint machine outside the supermarket when she was distracted by a man who stole the money from her purse.

A relative of the victim said: “The man took her purse and took £50 out of it. And laughed in her face.

“She was in a wheelchair, she is 66 years of age and couldn’t do anything.”

The victim’s relative said she had tried to call for help at the busy city centre thoroughfare.

“She said that she tried to shout to get some help, and shouted at the man,” they added.

“But she thinks she didn’t shout loud enough because she was upset and in shock.”

Knowing that area at that time of day I'm not the least bit surprised!
