Water hydrant drenches city street after suspected vandal attack

One councillor says: "Vandals are putting lives at risk"



This is the scene in Coventry this afternoon as a water hydrant throws water across a residential street.

Vandals are believed to be to blame for smashing open the hydrant in Palm Tree Avenue, Aldermans Green, which is now spurting water up to 20 feet in to the air.

CoventryLive has received reports of reduced water pressure in the area and one councillor has taken to Twitter to say lives are at risk.

Councillor Ed Ruane, who represents Henley ward, tweeted to say: "Vandals are putting lives at risk.

"Reduced water pressure seriously hampers the ability of @WestMidsFire to tackle fires.

"It has led to thousands of households going without water, which is a serious matter for our elderly or those with very young children."

Severn Trent Water, which is responsible for water hydrants, has been contacted for comment.

Last summer saw firefighters attacked as they tried to turn off broken hydrants in the Wood End area of the city, having bottles and stones hurled at them.
