The girl was walking down Dunsmore Avenue when a car drove past firing a pellet gun.
It hit the lamppost but then the car turned around and fired another shot from the pellet gun which hit the girl in the back of the leg.
The incident happened around 6pm on Friday evening.
Police are now appealing for information.
A post on Coventry Police's Facebook page said: "We are appealing for information after a 12-year-old girl was hit with a pellet gun on Dunsmore Avenue, Willenhall , Coventry at 6pm on Friday (31 May).
"The teenager was walking down the road with her friend, when a grey car drove past firing a pellet gun which hit a lamppost.
"The car turned around and fired another shot from the pellet gun, hitting the teenager in the back of her leg.
"Fortunately she was not seriously injured and investigations are ongoing."
