West Midlands Police was "alerted by the unusual manner" in which the man in his 30s was carrying the tree on Quorn Way, Binley, at 1830 BST on 16 May.

Pc Mel Oldershaw said: "In over 12 years police service I have never before arrested anyone for stealing a tree."

The potted acer was fire red and about 2ft high.

Police appealed for anyone who may have had a tree stolen in the Ernsford Grange or Binley area of the city to contact the force.
