Terrified staff were assaulted during THREE thefts from the same Nuneaton store in less than FOUR hours.

Police were called out three times to the Co-op store in Camp Hill last night, the final time in which members of the public and two staff members were injured.

The evening of drama around the store started at 5.20pm when a group of young people were reported to have stolen two crates of Budweiser from the Copper Beech Road-based shop.

The same group are believed to have returned at 7.10pm and stolen another crate of beer.

During this theft, a female member of staff tried to stop one of the gang members by standing in the way of the door but he grabbed her arm and pushed her out of the way.

Half an hour later, police were called to reports that four suspects had stolen a box of Stella bottles from the nearby Jesvic Convenience Store in Camp Hill Road.

Then, at 9.30pm, three suspects wearing hoodies and tracksuit bottoms went to the Co-op store in Copper Beech Road and helped themselves to beer.

They were approached by members of the public and two staff members who tried to stop them.

This led to them suffering from what have been described as minor injuries.

Investigations into the evening of trouble are ongoing and police are urging any witnesses to call 101 quoting incident 443 of April 30.

Security guards shipped in to protect trouble-hit Co-op shop

Security guards are now on patrol to protect staff and customers a trouble-hit shop in Nuneaton.

Following a series of incidents, one in which staff were assaulted, and complaints from customers, bosses at the Heart of England Co-operative Society took the unusual decision to hire security staff to watch over the shop in Camp Hill.

The guards are now in place during the day and night to provide ‘extra peace of mind’ for staff and customers alike.

A spokesperson for the Co-op , said: “We are working closely with the police and with Nuneaton’s anti-social behaviour officers following a rise in complaints about youths in Camp Hill in recent weeks.

“Our stores are already equipped with CCTV cameras but with the summer holidays upon us we have brought in additional measures on our premises to give our employees and our customers extra peace of mind.

”As always we will take the appropriate measures to ensure our employees and customers are protected.”
