Football fans in cities across the country will be flocking to big screens to see England's historic World Cup semi-final - but not in Coventry.

Supporters of the Three Lions will have to settle with their settee or a pub after Coventry City Council confirmed the city's big screen would remain blank during Wednesday night's crunch match.

There have been repeated calls for the screen, at the Transport Museum, to show matches during the World Cup, particularly since England booked their place in the last four.

Other cities have seen thousands flock to designated fan zones to watch Gareth Southgate's men in Russia.

Following England's quarter final triumph against Sweden over the weekend, there were further calls for a similar zone to be created in Cov.

Schemes in Newcastle, Sunderland and Ipswich have proven to be a success, leading to confirmation that a big screen will be put up in Hyde Park, London for the game.

But unfortunately, Coventry's screen will not be switched on for the occasion.

The reason, according to the council , is that the screen is broken, and appears unlikely to be fixed.

In addition to the existing screen being out of action, the council appears unlikely to put on any alternative events to mark what is a historic occasion.

Instead, it has urged people to visit one of the many places in the region showing the game.

Extremely unlikely England will lose - Croatia don't look as if they could beat Coventry City let alone England - but there'll probably be rioting either way.
