Most of the pubs in that area were conversions from watchmakers houses, and not always too expertly done either! The bay window would be a 1920s addition and not allowed by planners today. In 1953 Northampton Breweries were given permisison to build a huge new replacement for the Nursery on the corner of Lord Street and the Allesley Old Road but nothing ever came of it.
According to official records the building just above the Nursery was also a pub called the 'Sun Dial' up until 1908. Today it is a pair of private houses. At least two other pubs in the same area also reverted to private residences around the same time.
This is a view from the top end of Lord Street looking down towards the Nursery and then open fields beyond:
The children are probably from the Sunday School which is the large building on the left.
This beautiful building still survives but is in a much neglected state.
