Four arrested after van smashes into railway bridge - causing huge train delays

Warwickshire Police arrested two men and two women from Coventry



Four people were arrested after a van, believed to be stolen, was set on fire underneath a railway bridge - causing huge delays for commuters this morning.

Police and fire crews attended a van on fire underneath the railway bridge on Main Street in Brandon, near Coventry, shortly after 5:30am.

Two men and two women, all from Coventry, were arrested on suspicion of theft, failing to stop and driving under the influence. They remain in police custody.

Railway engineers closed the railway line during the early hours of this morning while they assessed the damage and falling debris.

Trains were unable to run between Rugby and Coventry and National Rail warned that journeys could be delayed by up to 90 minutes.

Some morning commuters faced long delays whilst waiting for services towards London from Birmingham New Street and Coventry station with many trains being cancelled or diverted.

A replacement bus service was put on between Coventry and Northampton calling at Long Buckby and Rugby.

Passengers were told they could use their tickets for any services including some buses out of Coventry.

National rail confirmed that all lines had reopened shortly after 9am but said they were expecting residual delays of up to an hour.
