A Coventry dental surgery does not provide safe care, according to health watchdogs.

Rotherham Road Dental Practice, also known as Holbrook Dental Surgery, was visited by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in November.

And in a report published on Monday, inspectors said the practice “did not meet standards” after ruling there were problems with two of five key areas under review - safety of services and how services were led.

The report found:

- certain pieces of emergency equipment, including oxygen masks and tubing, were out-of-date

- certain equipment had not been serviced properly, including the ultrasonic cleaner and X-ray machines

- a key piece of equipment which reduces the dose of radiation was broken

- emergency medicines and equipment were not taken on home visits

- the practice did not have a defibrillator in the event a patient suffered a heart attack

- the practice only had one pre-filled syringe of adrenaline, which might not be enough to sustain a patient having an allergic reaction

- the practice did not have a policy regarding safeguarding vulnerable adults

- risk assessments regarding the health and safety of staff, visitors and patients had not been completed, with the last fire risk assessment in 2007

- the practice did not have a process in place to manage significant incidents

The report said: "We found that this practice was not providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations."

The provider must now send the CQC a report that says what action they are going to take to meet the requirements.

Despite the criticism, services at the practice, which is staffed by a principal dentist, a dental nurse, a trainee dental nurse and a receptionist, were found to be effective, caring and responsive.

The surgery was praised in the report for taking on NHS patients and offering home visits and late practice hours.

The dentist made accurate and detailed notes in dental records and the surgery was praised for being “very clean and clutter free” and for meeting national guidance in infection control.

Inspectors added: “Patients indicated that they were very happy with the level of care they received from the practice and staff were always police and helpful”.

The Telegraph has contacted the practice for a comment.

All smiles at Coventry dentist after improved report by health inspectors

Improvements have been made to a Coventry dental practice previously branded unsafe by a health watchdog.

Rotherham Road Dental Practice, also known as Holbrook Dental Surgery, was heavily criticised after a visit by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in November 2016.

The practice has wasted no time in looking to improve itself, and following the latest CQC inspection, the verdict is far more favourable.

The report, which was published last month, said: “We found that this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.”
