A Coventry man has been charged with offences relating to drug smuggling after more than half a million pounds worth of heroin was seized at Heathrow Airport.

Border Force officers stopped Fidele Rugonumugabo on Sunday after he arrived on a flight from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The 42-year-old, of Alison Square in Longford, was charged with being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion or attempted evasion of the prohibition on importation.

He was remanded in custody following an appearance at Uxbridge Magistrates Court on Monday June 12.

A Border Force official said the seized drugs, which were inside suitcases, were thought to weigh more than 10kg and be worth more than £500,000 once cut and sold on the street.

Following the seizure by Border Force, the investigation was passed to the National Crime Agency and a 42-year-old Dutch man was charged with importing a Class A drug.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear before Isleworth Crown Court on July 13.

Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to smuggling should call the Customs hotline on 0800 59 5000.
