The road, in Foleshill , has been taped off by officers. It is not yet clear what has happened.

The Telegraph understands that three police cars, a handful of officers and PCSOs are at the scene.

The road is currently closed off from the doctors' surgery to the Premier private members' club.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police confirms they are dealing with reports of a suspicious package in the area.

The road has been cordoned off, but no homes have been evacuated.

Our reporter at the scene, Antonia Bannister, tells us that “lots of children are coming home from school” along the street, while others are waiting outside the doctors’ surgery.

She adds: “They seem frustrated about not being able to get down the road, but are otherwise calm.”

Antonia says that not even the people in the houses near to the cordon know what’s going on.

She also says that traffic is building as people are trying to turn their cars around in the narrow street.

Reports of suspicious package found in Foleshill turn out to be false alarm

Reports of a suspicious package found in Foleshill yesterday turned out to be a false alarm, according to police.

Bomb disposal experts were called to Station Street West just after lunchtime on Friday.

Fortunately nothing suspicious was found with a West Midlands Police confirming: “The call was made with good intent, but the item was not found to be suspicious.”

One greengrocer told the Telegraph how business had been slow as no one could get down the road.

Another passerby said how his car had been trapped in the cordon for two hours and he had been unable to pick up his granddaughter from nursery.

A lorry attempting to reach a business park further down the road was forced to try and reverse back onto the Foleshill Road.

Rush hour traffic along the Foleshill Road was made worse by motorists slowing to survey the scene or having to find alternative routes.

Parents with schoolchildren who live in the road also had to find places to wait until they were allowed back to their homes.

Hundreds of people stopped at the scene to take photographs and to try and establish what was happening.

The road reopened shortly after 6pm.
