Officers rushed to intercept a car after reports of someone carrying a handgun

Armed police raced to stop a car after a 999 call which suggested someone was driving around Bedworth with a gun.

A worried caller told police they though they had seen someone getting into the vehicle with a handgun on Friday evening.

Firearms officers from Warwickshire Police’s operational patrol unit were quickly sent to intercept the car.

The vehicle was soon located by officers on Newtown Road in Bedworth at about 10.45pm.

Police spoke to the occupants inside the car to investigate the allegation but said no firearm was found and the incident was resolved peacefully.

A spokesman for the OPU said: “Armed police were deployed to this incident to maximise public safety and to deal appropriately according to their training.”
