Residents are standing up against plans to build hundreds of homes in their village.

Council plans to create 700 new homes in Bulkington have been met with disdain from villagers, who claim the plans will “destroy” the countryside.

Hundreds of people have backed a petition protesting against the development in Bulkington, which is being proposed as part of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council’s borough plan.

The plans for 691 homes are split into two, with 196 proposed for east of the village and 495 for the west.

To meet housing need, the council is proposing to remove green belt land in both of these areas, as well as sites across Nuneaton and Bedworth.

Lauren Richardson started the petition and a Facebook group called ‘Save Bulkington Green Belt Land’.

She said: “Nobody in the village wants this to happen, everyone I have spoken to is against it.

“The school is full up as it is and the doctors are full, our road is so busy.

“When I first heard about the plans I thought ‘700 houses, yes I might be able to afford a house’ but then I saw it was green belt land.”

“The green belt is lovely, this is the reason why we moved to Bulkington, the fields are gorgeous.

“Once it’s gone it’s gone , when does it stop?

“We are a village not a town, if they start removing green belt land then there are still fields behind them, what’s stopping them then building on those too?”

Some of the homes could be built in fields close to Severn Road, Bedworth Road, and Coventry Road. The other set of houses are planned for behind Nuneaton Road, Lancing Road and Long Street.
