Samoan Joes in Spon Street wants to make sure women feel safe



Marketing manager Rob Hall explained: “Basically we have posters in the women’s toilets instructing them what to order at the bar should they feel unsafe or uneasy.

"All staff will be fully trained on what to do should some one come to the bar for a "tiki shot".

“Based on what option they choose, we will then make sure that they are made to feel safe and what ever action needed is taken.

Rob added that the decision was made to introduce the posters into the city centre cocktail bar because of the increasing number of people meeting for the first time through online dating apps, like Tinder and Match.com.

He said: “With a huge serge in online dating from sites such as POF, Tinder and Match we have put this initiative in place to safeguard anyone should something not go to plan. "

"Maybe they don't look like there photo or maybe they are just a bit strange, but if there is something wrong, Joe and the team are here to help.

"The internet can be a scary place & in 99% of cases everything will run smoothly but this initiative is in place should some one need assistance."

He added: "We hope others follow our lead on this and do what they can to make customers feel safe and welcomed in our venues."

Similar campaigns to tackle sexual assault and violence are being run in bars and nightclubs across the UK, Canada and the United States.

In one bar in Arizona, women are told to ask for an Angel shot.

Lincolnshire County Council have even jumped on board by asking city bars to display posters telling women to ‘ask for Angela’ if they need help.
