A man has died after he was hit by a train between Coventry and Birmingham.

Emergency services were called to Marston Green at 1.20pm today, but the man was confirmed dead at the scene.

British Transport Police have said they are looking to inform the next of kin.

A spokesman for BTP said: “We were called to Marston Green railway station near Solihull at 1.20pm today to reports of a person being struck by a train.

“Officers attended alongside the local ambulance service and sadly a person has died at the scene.

“The death is not believed to be suspicious and officers are working to contact the next of kin.”

The air ambulance landed near to the train station to provide support for other emergency services.

Thousands of people were left stranded as trains were cancelled throughout the afternoon and into rush hour.

Rail replacement buses were put on for people trying to travel between Coventry and Birmingham New Street, with commuters queueing to get home.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a collision involving a train and a pedestrian at Marston Green Railway Station, Holly Lane at 1.20pm this afternoon.

“Sadly, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save the pedestrian and death was confirmed on scene.

“The driver of the train was assessed but didn’t require hospital treatment.”
