Nuneaton councillor's anger over Nazi smear photo

A bizarre mocked up image was posted online suggesting councillor was 'bezzy mates' with Hitler

A Nuneaton councillor has called for an apology after a “highly offensive” mocked-up photo suggested he was “bezzy mates” with Hitler.

Coun Ian Lloyd, who represents the Camp Hill ward, was hit with the Nazi smear, which was posted on a Bedworth campaigner's Facebook page.

The crudely mocked-up image showing Coun Lloyd standing next to Hitler was allegedly posted on a Facebook page owned by Rich Pacey, who was a prominent member of the Woodlands Action Group last year.

Coun Lloyd said: “I have been in politics for many years and getting criticised goes with the job. I have a thick skin and don’t mind as long as it is constructive or justified. I do not normally answer comments made by people like Richard Pacey, but on this occasion I feel that I must.

“The doctored photograph posted of me standing next to Hitler with words suggesting he found it in my family history is highly offensive. It gives the impression my family were Nazis.

“Few things are more nasty or more offensive.

“Members of my family gave their lives so we could live our lives as we do today and I find his actions in posting this picture deplorable. He even tagged me in the post.”

Captioning the photo, which was posted on Friday, Mr Pacey wrote: “Found this whilst looking into the family history of Councillor Ian Lloyd aka ‘Lala’. Bezzy mates by the look of it.”

The North Warwickshire and Bedworth Labour party has called for the image to be removed and an apology to be issued by Mr Pacey.

Coun Lloyd added: “Like my dad, I am an ex service man. I followed in my family tradition, serving my Queen and country. Bedworth people have a long history of remembering those that have fallen in the many conflicts including at the hands of Hitler in the Second World War.

“Mr Pacey should do the decent thing and apologise for his actions against me, my family and to anyone else who has been offended by this image.”

As a member of the Woodlands Action Group, which struck up its campaign when the Woodlands area of Bedworth was earmarked for development in the council’s borough plan, Mr Pacey has been vocal in his criticism of some councillors.

He declined to comment on the photo he posted.
