Workmen dig up part of Coventry city centre to stop build-up of ‘fatbergs’

People pouring hot oil and fat down drains are creating 'fatbergs' which are clogging up sewer pipes and causing flooding

Workers are now spending two weeks removing the concrete-like fat from sewer pipes caused by cooking waste, wipes and nappies.

Now the Coventry-based water company is issuing a plea to homeowners and restaurant owners to not pour hot oil and fat down the drain.

Sarah-Jayne O’Kane, from Severn Trent, said: “With Christmas fast approaching we know there will be lots of cooking going on and our message to all those chefs out there is please don’t pour fat, oil and grease down the kitchen sink – it costs millions of pounds to repair each year and could result in your home being flooded.”

She added: “Our teams have been working really hard to start digging out the combination of fat, oil and grease that has blocked up these sewers.

“What’s really frustrating is that this problem is completely avoidable – it’s caused by restaurants and residents pouring oil and fat down kitchen sinks which lead to our sewers.

“When the hot mixtures cool down they quickly solidify and then stick to the walls of the sewer pipes.

“This builds up over time and eventually causes a blockage that can result in flooding.”

This seems a relatively new phenomenon. I don't remember these in the 60s or 70s.

Could it be due to fast food restaurants? Could it be due to us using oils instead of solid fats? Could it be due to the influx of foreigners who have different waste disposing habits? Or...
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

It's ecactly the reason Rebbonk as I ve watched tv programs of other parts of the UK are having the same problem where foreign fast food take aways and restaurants are .
