A street sweeper was battered and had his uniform ripped to pieces while doing his job in Nuneaton.

Martin Mumper was cleaning near to the town hall when he was attacked on Thursday afternoon.

The 43-year-old was left with head and face injuries, including a swollen eye for which he needed hospital treatment.

He said the attack could have been much worse.

Mr Mumper, from Stockingford, said: “I was very, very lucky, it could have been a lot worse, my high-vis jacket was ripped to shreds.”

Mr Mumper has been a town centre cleanser operator for the past 16 years and has never experienced trouble in the past.

The attack has not deterred him and he is determined to get back onto his ‘“little road sweeper” as soon as possible.

He is keen to thank all of those who came to his aid.

Mr Mumper said: “I would like to thank two girls and their boyfriend who helped me.

“I would also like to thank the camera operator and the security staff from across the town who all came rushing to help me, I am ever so grateful.”

Alan Franks, managing director at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, condemned the incident.

“This is a disgraceful attack on a council employee who was just going about doing his daily duties.

“We are assisting police with their enquiries and understand someone has been arrested in connection with the incident.”

  • A 26-year-old man has been charged with three counts of criminal damage, two counts of assault and two counts of assaulting a constable.

I hope a long custodial sentence will be levied on the person responsible, but I won't be holding my breath.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Custodial sentences are a joke. One Nuneaton career criminal even claimed on TV he was looking forward to going back inside and was disapointed when the judge didn't give him one. :fuming:
