A teenage girl was left stranded after she was booted off her bus and fined £70 for mistakenly paying the wrong fare - which was just £1 less.

Chloe Garbett, who is 16, phoned her mum in tears as she ended up having to walk alone the rest of the way to college and arrived late.

The City College student lost her seat on the number four bus for not paying an adult’s fare of £2, when she thought she could pay a £1 child’s rate.

Travel company National Express said while Chloe might have made a genuine mistake, there are others who try to cheat their way into paying less.

Chloe’s furious mum Krista said: “She’s just started college so she’s really excited. But on that morning they pulled her off the bus and they left her there on her own.

“I’m outraged at the way they have treated my child, they should be ashamed of themselves to pick on 16-year-olds.

“They could’ve called me and I’d have paid the pound’s difference. But to pull her off the bus is out of order – they scared the life out of her.”

Supermarket worker Krista, aged 36, was refusing to pay the £35 fine, plus a £35 late fine.

But the travel company has since cancelled the charge “as a gesture of goodwill” and apologised.

A spokesman said: “Our fare structure is clearly displayed at point of purchase and states that child fares apply to persons aged between 5-15 years old.

“For students aged 16-18 there are discretionary subsidised fares available through Network West Midlands if using a valid 16-18 photocard and we are providing Ms Garbett with full details of this scheme should she wish to apply.

“On the date mentioned Ms Garbett was incorrectly travelling on a child’s ticket and the fine was therefore issued in line with our conditions of carriage.

“Whilst it may have been a genuine mistake, unfortunately there are people who do try and travel on our services without paying the appropriate fare.

“As a business National Express take fare evasion very seriously and our inspectors endeavour to treat all persons who do not present a valid ticket or pass equally.

“On this occasion we have cancelled Ms Garbett’s fine as a gesture of goodwill and we apologise for any concern or inconvenience caused.”
