Paramedics have taken a woman to hospital after a severe fire gutted part of a home in Foleshill .

Fire crews were called to the blaze, at the junction of Kingfield Road and Calico Way just after 10am today.

The first floor of the semi-detached property appears to have been badly damaged in the fire, with one of the front windows smashed.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: “The incident involved a severe fire in a first floor front box room which had spread to the loft space.

“One female has gone to hospital for a precautionary check.”

The fire service said they did not know yet what had caused the blaze at the semi-detached property.

The Telegraph understands that the woman and her husband managed to escape the house themselves and were helped by neighbours before ambulance crews arrived.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said they were called to the scene by the fire service at 10.15am.

“We have taken a woman with smoke inhalation to University Hospital,” the spokesman said.
