...and there's elimination drama already

It's sad faces all around, as Melvin Odoom and Janette Manrara have become the first couple to be voted out of this year's Strictly Come Dancing.

Tonight's result show (October 2) saw radio DJ Melvin and his pro dance partner leave the competition – only there was elimination drama which meant they didn't get to dance for their survival, as would normally have been the case.

In fact, the dance off had to be cancelled altogether, which means the pair were sent home automatically.

During tonight's show, Tess revealed that it wasn't good news for Melvin and Janette; or Anastacia and her partner Brendan Cole, as both couples finished at the bottom of the pack.

And as the rules require, both couples were supposed to take to the floor to compete in one last dance off.

But Anastacia – who was seen struggling with an injury during last night's episode (October 2) – was not fit to perform.

So in those circumstances, as Claudia Winkleman explained, Strictly rules mean that the couple with the fewest public votes – in this case Melvin and Janette – would be eliminated.

"I just need to say, every single person on this show; the contestants, the dancers, the production, the judges, everyone is absolutely amazing," said former Xtra Factor host Melvin.

"It's a blessing to be on the show and thank you for Janette, it's been a great experience for me, so thank you.

"It was unexpected but I care about the people before everything else. I love Anastacia, I think she's a great woman, she's a great role model and her health comes first before everything else," he added.

"As much as this is a great show and competition, her health comes first. It's the way it is."

Aww. What a gentleman.

And Janette paid tribute to Melvin's "beautiful soul" and "infectious personality" either, thanking him for their all-too-brief Strictly experience. Double aww.

But we can't be *too* sad, because next week is Movie Week on Strictly, and we're super excited about it.

Plus, the celebrities and professionals will open the show in spectacular fashion with a special tribute to Rogers and Hammerstein, as they celebrate the golden age of musical movies in a magical group routine.

Jazz hands at the ready, people.
