We're feeling super sad about this one

The Great British Bake Off has gone and broken our hearts by making our beloved Val Stones the fifth baker to leave the tent.

Val did admittedly struggle throughout Pastry Week, from accidentally ignoring the recipe in the Bakewell tart technical challenge to producing a disastrous filo pastry Showstopper.

"My worst moment in the tent was my filo pastry as it had all melded into one," she admitted after her exit. "I held it up and said, 'This looks like Quatermass', and I thought, 'That's it, kid, you are out'."

Val, 66, admitted that she almost gave up during the lacy pancakes challenge in Batter Week but "decided to keep going".

"I am a reasonably good baker, but not a tent baker," she suggested. "But I did something else that no other baker achieved - I got all my family on television and that is more important to me."

She even looked on the positive side of her Bakewell tart's soggy bottom, saying: "Of course I was disappointed but you have to just go with it. Somebody has got to have a soggy bottom, so it might as well be me."

And basically Val continued to be absolute goals as she explained why she's loving being retired.

"I have been called eccentric but I feel that I have reached the age in my life when I can say what I like and get away with it - the nannas can get away with it," she said. "The bakers call me Nanna Val."

So we'll be very sad to miss Nanna Val in the tent from now on - and it sounds like so will Paul Hollywood.

"I love Val," he said. "Her character was fantastic in the tent - she buoyed everyone up every week. A great baker without a shadow of a doubt, but this was not her week."

Elsewhere, Rav Bansal just saved himself with his tasty amuse-bouche Showstopper as he came bottom of the technical challenge for the third week in a row.

And Tom Gilliford is probably relieved to be safe after Paul Hollywood refused to even nibble at his raw signature breakfast pastries and admitted that he was "disappointed" in his Showstopper.

But it was a much better week for Candice Brown, who was named Star Baker for the second time. So well done you, Candice!

The Great British Bake Off airs on Wednesdays at 8pm on BBC One.
