An ambulance crew who conked out on their way to a crash on the M6 were sworn at by foul-mouthed drivers.

The medics were travelling to the six-vehicle crash which closed part of the motorway near Corley Services last Thursday, when their vehicle suffered a rear tyre blowout.

While they waited on the hard shoulder, they say they were abused by passing drivers who hurled expletives at them - including one HGV driver who even stopped to call the crew ‘t*ats.’

A shocked crew member later took to social media to ask: “What has happened to society?”

They posted a picture of the ambulance on the hard shoulder on social media and said: “When I was growing up, I had so much respect for ambulance, police, fire services, as well as all public services.

“This isn’t the first occasion of receiving abuse from the public, just for doing my job.

“We’re here to help not to be abused. We’re so lucky to have the services available to us 24/7...without the services and I’m sure people’s attitude would change.”

Two other ambulances and a paramedic attended the multiple crash, which involved eight people. Two patients were taken to University Hospital in Coventry with minor injuries while the others were uninjured.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “It is completely unacceptable to hear of staff receiving verbal abuse after responding to help people in their hour of need.

“We have a zero tolerance policy in place and works extremely hard to bring the full weight of the law to bear on anyone who attacks our staff, physically or verbally. It remains hugely disappointing that any of our staff should have to suffer from such abuse.”

The incident also sparked outrage on Twitter, with JT French posting: “What the hell is wrong with people? I’m disgusted, utterly disgusted...these people should be utterly ashamed of themselves!”

Sadly, we seem to be breeding morons. I just hope that those guilty of the abuse don't need paramedic assistance in the near future.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
