A Foleshill man has been found guilty of destroying fish at a pool in Coventry city centre.

Bobi Ologu was found to have fished at Swanswell Pool without a licence and then destroyed the fish which were in water that is on private property.

Swanswell Pool is the property of Coventry City Council .

Ologu, 30, of Livingstone Road , was found guilty of the two offences - which took place on May 29 - in his absence at Coventry Magistrates’ Court.

He was fined £200 and ordered to pay £60 compensation, £135 court costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

The court also ordered that his fishing equipment was to be forfeited and destroyed.

A spokesman for Coventry City Council said that although Swanswell Pool, which was created in the 12th century, is the council’s property, the rules around fishing legally at the site are patrolled by the Environment Agency.

They added that fishing is allowed at the pool along as those doing so have the correct and valid licence.

Swanswell Pool was officially registered as a fishery in 2012 after concerns were raised with the condition of fish in the pool.

Hundreds of carp, rudd and roach were removed, along with dozens of goldfish, although a large number of fish still remain in the pool today.
