Lengthy queues on the clockwise ring road caused by malfunctioning traffic lights

Motorists were caught up in rush-hour traffic chaos on the Coventry ring road this morning because of malfunctioning traffic lights.

Problems resulted on the clockwise carriageway of the ring road as a result of the problem with lights at the junction with Foleshill Road.

The malfunction meant the traffic lights were out of sequence and as a result only a very small number of cars were able to get through at each change.

It meant there were lengthy queues on the clockwise ring road section stretching back as fas as the junction with Butts Road/Croft Road.

The problems were first reported shortly after 7.30pm and continued through until around 9am.

Traffic seemed to be flowing freely again shortly after 9am, though it is not known whether that was as a result of the malfunction being repaired or the level of traffic easing.

One reader who got caught up in the backlog told the Telegraph: “The traffic seemed to be backed-up pretty badly all the way back to the Skydome and it was difficult to work out what was going on.

“Once I eventually got as far as Folsehill Road it was clear there was a problem with the lights there, as only two or three cars were getting through each time the lights changed.

“That junction is a particularly busy one as even if people are wanting to continue on the ring road they have to wait for the lights to change.

“It was pretty chaotic.”

Can I blame the ginger gnome? - Please!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
